Cyber security comes in many forms.   An anti-virus, for example, will search your computer for known infections and attempt to either delete the threat or quarantine it.  Firewalls attempt to protect an organization from outside threats such a hacker, brute force password hacks, and such.  There are many more layers of security that I can go over.

Now to the question at hand, "What is your company's #1 cyber security risk?

Your Employees

What is Your Company's Biggest Security RiskIt may not be the employee you think.  Most of us, when thinking about employee misconduct that leads to a breach, think of someone who is lazy in his or her job.  They spend the day doing as little as they can; often on questionable websites when the boss isn't looking.  As bad as that is, it is not the #1 cyber security threat to your business.  No, your #1 cyber security threat could be the newest employee, the 50-year-old receptionist down the hall, or even your own in-house marketing personnel.

I have such a client who, years ago, had ask me to visit with their marketing person regarding a website she was attempting to access.  When I arrived, I noticed that she had done a Google search for Office Depot.  However, the first thing to pull us said 'Office Depot' but attempted to take her to a rogue site.  The reason she could not get the webpage to open was that we had implemented a business class content filtering system that blocks known malware sites.

Another example of why content blocking is so important is to increase productivity.  Studies have shown that the #1 abuser of the internet at work is the 30-year-old person who realizes that Mother’s Day is coming soon.  S/he does a quick search online and find a gift of some type.  Then, in the top right-hand corner, they see a banner advertising flowers.  That's nice!  May s/he'll go purchase those too.  Ahh, there's another advertisement.  I don't know that I would get that for mom, but I sure like it.  Before this normally good and hard-working employee knows it, they have spent 3 hours on the internet instead of doing their job.  We can help you with that too.

Our preferred content filtering provides blacklisting websites per category as well as specific websites that you may want blocked.  Likewise, we can also whitelist sites as well.  For example, you may not want your employees to search for a new job while at work but your HR personnel need to be able to access sites like InDeed, Monster, Glassdoor, and the like.  With our preferred spam filtering solution, you can block all employees from those websites and exempt the people who belong to the 'Marketing' group.

Malicious websites are just the beginning though.  Many bad actors use email phishing schemes to trick employees into clicking a link that will attempt to infect a computer and possibly spread throughout the entire company network.  This often leads to ransomware schemes where these bad actors extort their victims by encrypting all their files and will only unlock them if a payment is made to a off-shore bank account.
